Budapest to Keszthely

Leaving Budapest

September 23, 2005

On the move today. Caterina was full today due to some pre bookings so instead of moving to yet another hostel we decided to catch the train southwest to our next destination. We've found that being flexible is a key component to long term travel and we try to talk to as many travelers as we can for advice on places to visit and those to avoid. Everyone we spoke to had great things to say about the Lake Balaton area so we decided to give it a try. The train ride was about 4 hours and early on we could see just how large the lake was. Evidently it's the largest within mainland Europe. All along the lake are small villages and towns and we decided to stay in the only year round town of Keszthely. Once we got off the train we knew we were glad we decided to come down to the area. The lake was beautiful and the town was small but offered some great sights and loads of biking, hiking and running trails. We also found a cute panzion, Muzeum Panzion, and got a cheap rate and the entire house to ourselves except for the owners and their cute dogs.
