Touring Keszthely

September 24, 2005

Woke up to a gorgeous fall day. We decided to start the day off with a run along the lake. The lake was filled with pretty sailboats and along the path were groups of fishermen trying to catch their dinner. After our run we quickly got our maps and camera together and headed out to see the sights while the day was still warm. Our first stop was strolling through the small pedestrian mall while making our way towards the Festetics Palace. The Palace was home to the Festetics family who built the residence in 1745. This family must have had some major cash to build a house this size. These days some of the house had been turned into a museum and we also saw a wedding taking place on the grounds. From the palace we walked around the corner to the Marzipan Museum. I'm a big fan of all sweets so I thought this would be an interesting change of pace from all of the other museums we have visited. Inside there were over 100 ornamental cakes and decorations. Some were quite elaborate and other were downright funny-especially the Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles cake. How long has that sat in the display case? After looking at cakes for 1 hour we grabbed a piece from the cafe and took a nice break in their cute garden courtyard. After we finished our treat we heading back down to the lake. For dinner we decided to go out to a local restaurant for some Hungarian food. Craig tried the guyas(goulash) while I got the fried mushrooms caps with rice and a vitamin salad. Yes it was really called a vitamin salad and consisted of cabbage, corn, carrots and green beans. Both of our meals were quite tasty and hit the spot on a cool fall evening.
