Touring Bucharest

September 9, 2005

We decided to stay a couple days in Bucharest to plan the rest of our time in Romania. Henri and Alis at Butterfly gave us some great tips and hints on places to visit in Romania as well as fellow travelers at the hostel. We have found word of mouth extremely valuable during our travels. While in Bucharest we did some nice walks and a run around the gorgeous park near our hostel and also visited the art museum and the Palace of Parliament. The city is rather large and we were walking the entire time so each night we would come back to the hostel quite tired and made some yummy dinners (we have found instant soup mixes and add frozen or fresh veggies to them to make a tasty and cheap dinner option) to refuel our systems and then took advantage of the free internet and laundry that Butterfly provided. Overall we think that Bucharest has some nice areas, but I think that in 5 or so years it will be fabulous if they continue to renovate the historic buildings and squares.

**Note to female travelers. Two women at our hostel had incidents while in Bucharest. One was mobbed by young boys, she estimated them to be 7-10 years old, who tried to steal her camera and another had her bag slashed and her wallet stolen while traveling on a local bus. Could happen anywhere, but best to watch your valuables even in the most touristy areas. Just a heads up.
