Sevilla to Merida

When does the sunrise here?

January 23, 2006

Off to Merida today to visit the largest city in Roman Spain and the ruins that were left behind. As our bus pulled away at 8 am the sun still hadn´t risen and didn´t until close to 8:30. Needless to say that wouldn´t help my cause very much trying to get to work on time. The bus station was across the river so we walked along the modern bridge and into the town center where we found the tourist office by chance. With a city map in hand we found a charming pension which had a room with a bathroom, heat and a mini bar!!! All for 40 Euro. The mini bar was an evil temptation but the heavy duty shower, which we needed instructions to use, and the heater were fantastic perks for us. You can definitely say this trip has humbled us. Since it was siesta time we took advantage of the quiet city streets to look at some of the Roman ruins throughout the city. There are more than a handful around the city which are free to view along with a 1/2 dozen which cost 9 Euro for a combined ticket. It is simply amazing to see these wonderful historic ruins amidst the modern world as we know it.
