Diving in Kas

August 16, 2005

Today we took a quick 4 hour bus ride from Goreme to Kas. Kas is a quaint coastal town and even with the tourists it has kept its small town charms. The first day we arrived we found a nice pension for 30 lira a night which included a nice balcony and roof top terrace overlooking the sea. We walked around town and priced out various scuba operators. We'd heard that the diving was decent in the area so we thought we'd try our first dive together in Turkey. We found a nice German run company which we decided to go out with for their afternoon dive. The boat left at 1:00 pm so after a leisurely breakfast on our balcony we got some reading in and headed to the office. After getting our gear together we were off for a nice boat ride to the dive site. The boat and organization was so much cleaner and well run compared to Thailand. The price was a tad bit higher but well worth the comfort. There was only 1 other guy in our dive group so Craig and I were buddies and the dive master and the other guy stuck together. The dive itself was really nice. The water clarity was amazing! The clearest we've ever seen. The underwater scenery wasn't as beautiful as Thailand and other islands we've snorkeled in but still very nice. The entire dive was next to a large cliff so it had a very Meditteraen feel to it. Their was some nice coral and giant clams and a couple schools of small fish but the rocks and the cliffs were the big sites. Overall the dive was very peaceful and a great time being able to share the experience together.
